Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko believes Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka is deliberately avoiding meeting with the opposition, according to the Official website of Yulia Tymoshenko.

"The European Parliament passed a resolution on political repression in Ukraine calling for Lutsenko and other political prisoners to be released, and an end to selective prosecution. Deputies delivered this resolution to Pshonka demanding that he fulfill it, but he ran away. He nearly jumped out the window. It’s a Ukrainian phenomenon – ‘the prosecutor general on the run,’" Yulia Tymoshenko wrote today on Twitter.

Yulia Tymoshenko believes it is telling that the ruling party has reacted scornfully to the resolution of the European Parliament. "Yefremov, the leader of the Party of Regions, said that the European Parliament’s resolution doesn’t have to be followed. Only Yanukovych’s commands are followed: attack, fetch, lie down, catch," she added.

As reported, in a resolution passed in Strasbourg on June 9, the European Parliament expressed its "concern about the increase in selective prosecution of figures from the political opposition in Ukraine as well as the disproportionality of measures applied, particularly in the cases of Ms Tymoshenko and Mr Lutsenko, former Interior Minister."

The document goes on to stress that "ongoing investigations of prominent Ukrainian political leaders should not preclude them from actively participating in the political life of the country, meeting voters and travelling to international meetings.” Therefore, the EU is calling on the Ukrainian authorities to “lift the travel ban, both domestically and internationally, on Yulia Tymoshenko and other key political figures."

Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka has twice refused to meet with representatives of the Ukrainian opposition. On June 3, when deputies from BYuT-Batkivshchyna demanded an explanation from the prosecutor general as to why there was no response to Yulia Tymoshenko’s complaint, Pshonka’s assistant said that the prosecutor general was unable to meet with them due to illness.

Today, June 14, deputies once again went to the prosecutor’s office insisting that the European Parliament resolution on Ukraine be carried out. However, the prosecutor general’s assistant informed them that Viktor Pshonka is unable to meet because he is attending a meeting of the High Council of Justice.
