[08.09.2008 10:58] Socialist Party proposes Communists to unite into “Leftist Bloc”The Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU) has again proposed the Communist Party to create a joint Leftist Bloc. The SPU press-service has disclosed this to UNIAN citing Socialist political council secretary Yaroslav Mendus as saying. “We have turned to CPU with a letter proposing to create a Leftist Bloc”, Ya.Mendus said, adding: “Besides, we put forward this initiative as early as in 1998 and in 2002. We are waiting for their answer”. According to him, some hotheads in the Party of Regions and BYuT cherish plans about rising the barrier to the Verkhovna Rada up to 8-10%. However, he noted, “simple decisions are not a prerequisite of success in politics. A parliament, formed with such a barrier, will not reflect moods of overwhelming minority of the population, and, that is, it will be doomed from the very beginning”. Ya.Mendus is confident that a return to the proportional majority system of elections would be a significant step back in the country’s political development. The society exigently needs a proportional system of elections with an “open” list, which has been proposed by Socialists since long ago, he stressed. At the same time, the politician pointed out that should SPU will take part in the elections independently, “I’m confident that Oleksander Oleksandrovych [Moroz - SPU party leader - UNIAN] will head the party list at the regular election”.
