President Victor Yushchenko welcomed Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana, EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Portugal’s Foreign Minister Luis Amado to the Secretariat on Friday morning for the 11th Ukraine-EU summit, according to the President`s press-office.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Energy Minister Yuriy Boyko, Foreign Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Defense Minister Anatoly Hrytsenko and Deputy Head of the Presidential Secretariat Oleksandr Chalyy are expected to take part in the summit.

The plenary session of the 11th Ukraine-EU summit opened at 10 a.m. in Kyiv.

Its participants are speaking about European, regional and international issues, especially how to develop Ukraine’s ties with the European Union, and are expected to hear a report on the progress that has been made in talks to sign a new agreement on enhanced cooperation between Ukraine and the EU and a report on the implementation of the bilateral Memorandum on understanding in energy cooperation.

They are going to sign a Joint statement.
