Full support, subject to the detail of reforms to Ukraine`s constitution that will see Ukraine become a full parliamentary democracy. Yulia`s proposal makes good sense. As it stands the opposition can call fresh election at any time come November 2008. As long as Yushchenko remains in office Ukraine will always be held hostage by the President and ongoing conflict. The transition to a European style parliamentary system will put an end to the divisive and destructive power struggle., power should and must stand with the people`s democraticly; elected parliament. Yes redford the constitution then hold fresh presidential and parliamentary elections is realistic and worthy of support. Gene : Parliamentary system
The only reason Ukr T wants the parliamentary system is that he believe Yanu will gain power. The other day there was an interesting article in another newspaper that projected what would have happened to Ukraine if Yanu had kept power in 2004. If you like the Belarus situation, this is what would happen to Ukraine with a person like Yanu in charge who does not support democracy and has never done anything to promote it. Even though I have supported Yush in the past, I now understand he is not much different than the other two leaders in Ukraine with their desire for power. Yes, he has moved Ukraine towards democracy. But...now when he had a chance to work with Yulia and move Ukraine closer to Europe and a full democracy...he chose to undermine her...rather than work with her...all because he feared her popularity. The funny thing is that Yush would never have become president without her support and now he has turned on her. Yush has abused his position and now has no support from the people. It is sad as it could have been different and Ukraine could have benefitted. I have very mixed feelings about a parliamentary system at this time for Ukraine as I fear Yanu undermining the free press and democracy in Ukraine. But...I believe the parliamentary system will happen and can only hope Yulia can hold off Yanu...who will only move Ukraine towards a more Belarussian form of govt. |
